"For good Science Fiction to be appreciated, imagination must be Free!" Garry Dalrymple.
Here's how it works, donated books, comics, magazines, dvds, videos etc are placed on the front table. A very reasonable starting price is set and this price goes down as FREECON continues without ever reaching $0.
Where does the money go.... It is the major fundraising initiative of FREECON greatly helping to cover the out of pocket costs in organising a Free Entry (non-festival) SF&F event. Secondly, after meeting FREECON costs, some surplus cash is available for a cash prize pool to reward for the winners in the Freecon's Short SF Story writing competition.
Where do the books etc come from ... Everyone who supports or is considering attending the Freecon is invited to bring and donate a book or two that they can spare to FREECON's Paradox Auction. It doesn't have to be a Science Fiction or Fantasy book. Last year's Front table Auction cleared an impressive amount of DVDs, magazines, comics and videos.
This activity allows you to pass on your books etc to someone who you know will really appreciate them, in an intergenerational SF&F re-cycling initiative. There is a bonus of clearing away your old things to make way for the first 'must-haves' in your life.
Most of the leftovers are donated to the Sierra Unite
cause to help build up their libraries again.
