More About Sydney Futurians

Sydney Futurians is a group of individuals who enjoy discussion in Sci-Fi/fantasy
literature, movies and TV within genre also Sci-fi-like-science.  Sydney Futurians have a monthly meeting but also promote other groups in Sydney.   Meeting most months of the year, we meet on the third Friday of the month, except where that Friday clashes with a public holiday or is ahead of a long weekend.

We gather at the University of Technology Sydney UTS (in the foyer of the Tower building) to talk about Science Fiction. Our view of Science Fiction is broader than that of a fan club for one TV series or Author.  You are welcome to bring this experience to a Futurian meeting.
Our view of Science Fiction is broader than that of a fan club for one TV series or Author, but you are welcome to bring this experience to a Futurian meeting. We talk about the ideas found in Science Fiction Books, Magazines, Sci-Fi (TV and Movies), SF like Science and SF&F Fandom events such as local conventions, meetings and life as a SF&F fan.
The membership of this current group of Sydney Futurians changes over time.

Membership of the current Sydney Futurian group is by participation, if you show up and take part in the discussion then you are a Sydney Futurian. We are an unincorporated body, without membership fees, meeting entry costs or even a formal committee structure. We continue to meet and talk about Science Fiction because we believe that when it comes to SF, then the Imagination must be Free! It is an informal group.   Sydney Futurians also proudly present Freecon each year.

The original Sydney Futurian Society started meeting in 1939, three years after the convention or meeting of SF fans in England. We revere and respect them for starting Australian Science Fiction fandom at a time when being a Science Fiction fan was a brave and lonely thing. Currently we have indirect links with the members of that first group.

"For good Science Fiction to be appreciated, imagination must be Free!" Garry Dalrymple.

Sydney Futurians proudly Support The Sierra Leone Kamba School Library Project

In recent international rankings of disadvantage and life expectancy, the African nations of Zimbabwe and Sierra Leone come in at the very bottom of the list. While there is little prospect of immediate change for the better in Zimbabwe, in the case of Sierra Leone there are people who are trying to help now and they are close at hand.
Don't take my word for it, look up their website at www.sierraunite.org and see for yourself.

The members of Sierra Unite (TM) are Siera Leonian expatriates living in Australia who are collecting and shipping useful items to Sierra Leone through safe hands.

These items are being used to help re-build local education infrastructure that was destroyed during the recent civil war and disorder, one village at a time. The population of Sierra Leone is predominantly young and about that of NSW or Victoria.

Sierra Unite do not want your money, mostly they want stuff that you can spare, books and other educational materials. In addition to a feel good factor for giving to a people in great need, through Sierra Unite(TM) you have a rare opportunity to influence the development of a re-emerging nation.

If you choose to send them lots of Jane Austen, Astronomy, Science or Cricket books, then you might be helping to shape a rising generation of Jane Austen, Science, Astronomy and Cricket loving Sierra Leonians?

So why not look to your bookshelves during the coming dark nights of Winter and take steps to send a few of your spare and neglected books off to sunny Sierra Leone where they will be used and appreciated.
